Other Useful Stuff

It really is "a bit much" when an information manager has to create a category called "other useful stuff" but without a proper classification system (it's coming, honest, one day!) then this category stays. You wouldn't have me call it "miscellaneous", now would you?

Adviceguide from Citizens Advice
provides information on your rights, including benefits, housing, family matters and employment, and on debt, consumer affairs and health. Links go to the page for England where you will find tabs for Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Cymru.

Advicenow from Advice Services Alliance, the coordinating body for UK advice services
provides information on rights and the law in England and Wales including benefits, communications and media (very useful section which covers copyright etc), education and training, employment, family and personal, government, law and rights, health and social care, housing and homelessness and immigration and nationality.

Deals not only with the old but with those who are getting older (in fact anyone over the age of 50) - retirement planning etc.

Bized
A dedicated business and economics information gateway for students, teachers and lecturers.
Comes highly recommended for company information from an expert in business information sources.

British Education Index
"... an authoritative index to the contents of 300 education and training journals published in the British Isles, together with certain internationally published periodicals, and is expanding to cover national report and conference literature in the field".
Access to the bibliography is free but everything else has to be paid for by everyone except higher education institutions.

BUBL
A national information service for the higher education community.
Search the archives or read the online journals and abstracts, or simply browse the news and jobs sections.

CEGNET

The Centre for Guidance Studies at University of Derby
Research into guidance and a discussion forum on the main issues in careers .

The Electronic Training Village
Managed by CEDEFOP, an executive arm of the European Commission, ETV provides a complete picture of what is happening in training across Europe.
Of necessity this is at a fairly high level.
Information is accessed after logging in.

Foreign Information by Country (foreign to the USA that is) page by the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Guidance Council
Tells you about the work of the Council, its members, its sponsors and how you can join the Council.
You will also find information here about the Council's work on quality.
There are also links to members' sites, and to other useful sites too.

Livewire
A site dedicated to helping 16-30 year-olds to start and develop their own businesses.
It includes a national competition for new business start-ups, a news section and discussion forum.

National Foundation for Educational Research
Mainly school-based but there are many very good links.

National Statistics
There is a wealth of statistical information (sometimes overwhelming) in the form of summary and detailed stories and press releases. All are available free of charge as PDF downloads. The site can be searched by topic if you have a particular area of interest.

OfSTED
Useful if you want to look at inspection reports.

Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)
Information about all qualifications from primary to higher levels of NVQ.

Sector Skills Development Agency is now dead.
Information about its replacement is available at the old site but as at today (30 April 2008) it is still quite limited.

Skillsbase
The Database section of the site is a comprehensive source of LMI, education and skills data aimed, in particular, at those users who analyse statistics and interpret data regularly.
Narrative is designed to give non-specialist users an insight into skills trends without the need for carrying out analyses themselves.
Inforum provides a chatroom and bulletin board to promote discussion about labour market and skills-related information.
The Reference section includes a library page with many skill-related reports available for download.

University of Wolverhampton
A site with UK maps showing Universities, Colleges of Higher Education, Further Education Colleges and Research Sites.
These can be used to link to the home page, undergraduate prospectus, postgraduate prospectus, students' union, profile (provided by the British Council), library, academic departments etc of each of the institutions.
