Standards for Recording Information (about education and training opportunities)

A little bit of history
ADSET was set up by the then Department for Employment in 1990 to promote and disseminate standards for recording information through Using Learning Information (ULI). ULI was (is) an eight-part boxed set of documents which was revised in 1993 to four ring-binders.
The methodology used was appropriate for its time but is no longer.

The present
The need for standard methodologies for providing information is increasing not decreasing. There is now, in the learning opportunities world, no single organisation promoting the use of standard terminology across the range of databases available on the Internet.

The future
ADSET as currently constituted can provide a coordinating rather than a development role but I, Hazel Edmunds, can and will do that coordinating through this page of ADSET's website.
As from today, 1 May 2008, I will add items which I think appropriate to here with links to "the full story". Rather in the manner of a blog -- except that I don't have the technical competence to set that up (YET).

Talking Point: Should we stop using Ajax?
via Digital Web News Feed by Tiff Fehr on 26 April 08
James ‘Brothercake’ Edwards opened up a controversial can of geekiness with his recent Dev.Opera post, Stop using Ajax!. Brothercake argues that we are far more inclined to chase the latest-greatest technology than truly commit to accessibility, and Ajax methodologies are a prime offender. Using not-very-accessible technologies because they’re cool is at odds with the implicit humanistic idea underlying web standards—universal access. His point speaks to the very heart of the standards movement, and how widely we see that challenge.
Hazel's comment:
There's a good discussion going on around this issue. Should we be embracing the latest technology or should we be ensuring that the information is accessible? Can these two things be brought together so that the best of design technology meets the needs of all potential users?
