There are thousands of websites providing information about job vacancies in the UK -- not including sites maintained by specific companies and/or trade associations. This selection represents a small fraction of that number.
My idiosyncratic method for choosing which sites to include is to judge the "look and feel" entirely subjectively and then try to find myself a job as an information manager working in London or the northern home counties. Specialist sites I check by searching for relevant job titles but again specifying a geography.
Does the site have a privacy policy?
Is it easy to find company information, as required by law?
That said, however, I will include organisations that have been recommended by other sites and publications but with a caveat.
The list starts with portal-type sites and then continues in alphabetical order by the name of the site or organisation providing the information.
Agency Central - Recruitment agencies & job sites directory.
Allows users to search for recruitment agencies by name,
county and skillset. CVs can also be submitted on-line for subscribing
agencies to view at their leisure.
No company information or privacy policy that I could find.

All the Top Bananas
A job search engine that employs "Boris the job spider" which, we are told, "can read job boards, company websites, newspaper websites and recruitment agency sites and put the job in the Allthetopbananas.com job index with salary, location, job title and full description."
Searching for an information manager's job was a bit confusing. The search engine appear to be searching for both words independently but then ordering the list by word proxinity which did bring the most relevant jobs to the top of a long list which included "Reception manager ... phone for more information..."
Company information was hard to find and the terms and conditions are both long and complex using what to me seemed to be unhelpful language. There is no direct link to a privacy policy. (HBE 26/04/08)
All Jobs UK
"We enable candidates to have comprehensive access to every recruitment resource in the UK, including the largest database of Recruitment Agencies, Employers, Recruiters, Newspapers and Trade Magazines. We also host the annual National Online Recruitment Awards."
I found one of the most useful things on this site is the online recruitment index which provides an indication of movement in the labour market from an analysis of online advertising for candidates.
Privacy policy and terrestrial address information available -- but not company details. (HBE 26/04/08)
Net Jobs
Job database with thousands of jobs from major UK recruitment
agencies - mainly management and IT biased.
More than just another job site
- eg. it provides feedback on the jobseeking process
Overseas Jobs
Express
Provides hints and tips for working in a variety of
different countries together with the actual vacancies.
Links to a
"Directory of nearly 4,000 other sites offering job listings, career
information and resumes". (number not checked but seems about right!)
Recruit
Online
Recruit Online has a "comprehensive" directory of UK
recruitment agencies, which are searchable by industry sector.
It covers a
vast range of categories.

Useful news feed for updates to the labour market situation around the globe.
Company information is clearly set out in Terms and Conditions and the Privacy Policy is an exemplar of its type. (HBE 26/04/08)
eteach.com
(formerly known as Appointments for Teachers)
This very user-friendly site
containing some 1,000+ vacancies in the education sector (not just for
teaching).
Sponsored by The Independent.
Financial Times
Advertises mainly senior jobs in
accountancy, banking & general finance, IT and other top opportunities.
Has HRD stories and much else.
Fish4jobs
Career centre, recruiter profiles, job news, jobs in in wide range of areas.
One of the information manager jobs I looked at today was very tempting -- and I found it very easily. Unfortunately nothing local.
Company information is hidden at the bottom of the privacy policy -- not the best place to put it but at least it's there and, of course, so is the privacy policy itself. (HBE 26/04/08)
Flourish
UK
Flourish provides information in the hotel and catering sector.
Recruitment for chefs & other staff for hotels/restaurants in England,
Scotland & Wales.
Graduate Recruitment
Bureau
Jobs are sorted by degree discipline. "Employment agency run
by graduates for graduates."
GTI
Career
advice and jobs for graduates - a very quirky sort of site but there is good
information when you get to it.
The Guardian
Contains an enormous range of vacancies.
As you'd expect from a
newspaper that publishes a weekly IT and Internet supplement, computing jobs
are well represented, whether you're looking for programming, Web-design or
editorial vacancies, but Jobs Unlimited also includes a large number of
secretarial, marketing, media, charity and education jobs.
You can browse
by job type, location or keywords, and the only real flaw is that many of the
advertisers don't include Web or e-mail addresses for people to get in
touch.
Jobmall
A portal to: IT Arcade; Engineering Arcade; Education Arcade; and Legal
Arcade
Jobs and
Skills (formerly Worktrain)
"The national jobs and learning site"
that provides access to about 400,000 jobs and 500,000 learning opportunities.
Childcare information, job profiles, and volunteering opportunities are
also available.
The site includes more than 150 external links, information
for employers, and a news section.
Jobsite
This site offers jobsearch tips and indexed vacancies in many general areas.
Monster
Has more than 5,000 jobs on it, in a range of
sectors and at various levels.
Many are for specific employers that are
named in the listing.
Once billed as the definitive (and only) source of
information about vacancies available.
Tips & Advice Internet (a publication I trust implicitly) said (Year 12 Issue 1 (11 January 2008) that "Monster is the best employment advice site".
New
Scientist
A very well indexed site providing details of scientific,
technological and academic posts (which is my personal favourite, Hazel
Edmunds)
Opjobfinder
Commercial and technical vacancies in
electronic and mechanical engineering "at all levels" throughout the UK.
Note - when I checked I could not find anything at blue collar level -
particularly in mechanical engineering.
People
Bank
One of the earliest arrivals on the "jobs on the Internet"
scene - and still one of the largest.
PhD Jobs
Actually not restricted to those with a PhD but does require job-seekers to
have a postgraduate qualification. Job categorisation is by academic
discipline. Looks very useful.
Public
Sector Careers
A specialist website dedicated to promoting career
opportunities within the public sector and charity sector. Endeavouring to
inform all communities about opportunities whilst also promoting equality and
diversity.
The name of this site is something of a misnomer since the range
of jobs covers the not-for-profit sector (designated "charities" but including
educational establishments) as well as local and central government. The search
terms are fairly basic, even in advanced mode, and you need to access before
getting a nil result. Against that I thought this a "useful for browsing" site
and adding your CV to any website where you think (appropriate) employers will
find it can only be a good thing.
SSR
Security recruitment agency covering Europe.
Has latest vacancies, industry reports and, unusually for a recruitment
site, further information about the industry.
The
Times
Site contains a wide range of jobs in accountancy and
finance, building and construction, engineering and technical, general
appointments, information technology, legal appointments, media/sales and
marketing, public appointments, secretarial (high profile positions).
Note
that I've had difficulty loading on several occasions, Hazel Edmunds.

the design, reprographics and printing industries, with operations covering the
UK, Europe and North America.

at this!
workthing.com
Jobs, advice, training.
I did not
find this site easy to use, Hazel Edmunds.
Youreable.com (formerly Disability Net)
A Website for
disabled people and their employers or potential employers which has sections
on news, travel, community, equipment etc.
